What is concerning is the rapid development
Artificial intelligence is the topic of the Science Year 2019. In fact, we are experiencing a tremendous acceleration in this research discipline: robots, self-driving cars, machines that can detect cancer on X-rays better than experienced doctors: these are not visions of a distant future. This is already in the works today. But what do the rapid advances in artificial intelligence mean? Will intelligent machines soon take our work away from us? Do we ever lose control of the robots? Prof. Alexander Waibel works at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He has been researching machines capable of learning for four decades. Author: Stefan Fuchs

Speech recognition - Radio KIT Knowledge in a nutshell
Speech recognition is a technical term from applied computer science. It belongs to the research field of computational linguistics and has undergone rapid development over the past two decades. Smartphones, computer operating systems and cars can now be controlled with voice commands. In the series “Knowledge on point”, Radio KIT interviewed the international expert on this topic, Prof. Alexander Waibel about the keyword “speech recognition”.

A home with language? - Prof. Alexander Waibel on the idea of "Home". When people have to change their place of residence every few months for professional reasons, when hundreds of thousands are driven from their homes by war and poverty, the question of “home” is particularly urgent. Is it the place of childhood memories? The smell of your favorite food? Is home connected to a feeling of being at home at all, or is it perhaps a construct that can be explained more rationally? The computer scientist and robotics scientist Prof. Alexander Waibel is himself an intercontinental commuter. He teaches and researches not only at KIT in the field of speech recognition and machine translation but also at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA. As a contribution to the ARD theme week “Heimat”, he revealed to KIT reporter Jennifer Warzecha in the first part of a two-part interview what “Heimat” means to him.
